Why this matters more than follower count
If the account gets restricted, the algorithm changes, or you lose access, the followers go with it. There is no export button on someone else's platform.
An email list is the one asset that moves with you. It is also the only channel where reaching the people who asked to hear from you does not cost money.

Double opt-in collects fewer addresses and keeps the real ones. Typos and throwaways are what quietly wreck your deliverability.
Consent is not a checkbox you can skip
If you have subscribers in the EU or UK you need explicit consent, and the wording is yours to write. Even where the law does not require it, it is the difference between a list that opens your email and one that reports it as spam. Unsubscribes and hard bounces go onto a suppression list automatically and stay there — including if the address is re-imported later. That is not optional and cannot be switched off, because sending to people who asked you to stop is how a sending domain gets blocked.

Common questions
Can I really export on the free plan?
Yes. No plan locks export. A list you cannot take with you is not a list you own, and charging for the exit is a dark pattern.
Someone signed up but isn't in my list.
With double opt-in on, they are not a contact until they click the confirmation link. Unconfirmed signups do not count.
What happens when I hit the contact limit?
New signups stop being stored. Export what you have and upgrade, or clear contacts you no longer need.
